Update on Louisiana NARHA Centers Affected by Hurricane Katrina While in Louisiana for the annual Louisiana Therapeutic Riding Association meeting January 26-27, 2008, I had the opportunity to visit with several folks from centers that had been affected by Hurricane Katrina. Most are back to business as usual serving their clients and growing their programs. All are extremely grateful for the generosity of the NARHA Membership with the creation of the Katrina Catastrophe Fund. I heard over and over that the centers would have never survived if it weren’t for the grants they received to help get them back on their feet. They had months of no income but their expenses continued to pile up for horse care, damage repairs, utilities, etc. For those who gave to the Catastrophe Fund, please know that you made a huge difference for these centers. Without your help, many of them would have had to close their doors. With the creation
of the new NARHA Catastrophe Fund NARHA Centers across the nation
who find themselves in crisis or experience a disaster now have
somewhere to go for help. |

Wow! Region 8 is Really Growing Region 8 consists of NARHA Centers in the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas. There has been a tremendous growth of new NARHA Centers in our region since late 2007. It is so exciting to see the interest in therapeutic equine assisted activities flourish. Here in Northwest Arkansas our center, Horses for Healing, receives many calls each month from folks in our area who have heard about NARHA and want to know what it takes to start a center. We are always happy to let them come to visit to see what we are doing and to “pick our brains.” When we started our center over 17 years ago there were no centers close to us. I always wanted to visit other centers but our budget wouldn’t allow for travel. When we finally could afford to attend Regional and National Conferences we were able to visit some of the hosting centers where we learned many things that we could use back at home. I am certain that all NARHA Centers receive these same kinds of calls and it is so important to our industry that we take advantage of these wonderful networking opportunities. I am always amazed how the NARHA Centers are all so willing to share their knowledge and resources. Following is a list of the new NARHA Centers in Region 8 that joined from November 2007 through February 2008. Join me in welcoming them to Region 8 and try to find an opportunity to visit soon. You might just learn something. I hope that I didn’t leave anyone off. - Debbie Studyvin

Malinda Smith has once again agreed to be the Arkansas NARHA State Chair replacing Patricia Weldon who is unable to serve due to illness. Malinda has served before as State Chair and is easily recognized with her big cowboy hat and NARHA T-shirt at equine events across the state. We all hope that Patricia gets well soon. She can be reassured that Arkansas is in the capable hands of Malinda in her absence.
