EFMHA and NARHA Horses for Heroes Combined Workshop

Healing from Trauma with the Help of Horses
This combined morning workshop will be presented by Dr. Casey Taft, a professional from the National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After the morning break, participants will attend separate presentations. The morning workshop will cover:

  • Neurobiology of how trauma affects the brain of a child and an adult

  • How the brain heals from trauma

  • Specific factors equestrian programs can incorporate to facilitate healing for clients who have experienced trauma

Casey T. Taft, PhD, is a staff psychologist at the Behavioral Sciences Division of the National Center for PTSD in the VA Boston Healthcare System and associate professor of psychiatry in the Boston University School of Medicine.

This workshop will present practical ideas and therapeutic activities from equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) and equine facilitated learning (EFL) programs that work with children and adults who have experienced trauma. .

 Dr. Marilyn Sokolof, PhD, a licensed psychologist, is a past president of EFMHA and an associate instructor for NARHA’s Equine Specialist (ES) Program. Memree Stuart, MLS, a NARHA Certified Registered Level Instructor and an Equine Specialist, has served on the boards of EFMHA and

NARHA. Priscilla Marden, CEFIP-ED, is a NARHA Certified Registered Level Instructor and EFMHA Board member. Joseph P. Callan, MS, MSW, LCSW, is co-founder and clinical director of TRAVERSE, Inc., a NARHA Premier Accredited Center in Tampa, FL, and serves on the EFMHA and NARHA Boards.

NARHA Horses for Heroes Workshop

This workshop will cover special considerations when working with military personnel and veterans. Discussion of topics such as financial considerations and opportunities, interaction with the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center representatives and military contacts will be included.

 Maximizing Communication for the Non–SLP
This workshop will provide a more comprehensive understanding of speech and language systems. It will cover breakdowns in communication and effective strategies and practical exercises for communication with special needs populations in the hippotherapy and therapeutic riding setting. The information in this workshop is relevant to physical and occupational therapists, therapeutic riding instructors, medical professionals, horse handlers and volunteers.

Meredith Bazaar, MS, CCC-SLP, and president of American Hippotherapy Association, is a speech language pathologist who incorporates hippotherapy into her private practice.
