2008
NARHA Independent Adult Equestrian of the Year Recognition Award
Nomination Information
So many
participants at NARHA centers have worked with their disability
to be independent equestrians. Do you know an adult
who
represents that community in a unique and remarkable manner?
For the
first time, this year NARHA will award an individual membership
to the NARHA 2008 Adult Independent Equestrian of the Year.
Your nominees don’t need to be a NARHA member or join. It is
our honor to recognize this individual by welcoming him or her
into the community that appreciates the power of the horse to
change lives. And of course, we hope he or she will be able to
join us at the 2008 NARHA National Conference and Annual Meeting
Awards banquet on Saturday, November 1.
Join us
in recognizing again the 2007 Adult Equestrian of the Year!
Determined, grateful, selfless—these are the words people at the
Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center use to describe Dr. Nellie
Owen. Nellie always dreamed of owning and training horses,
but after a jeep accident in 1977, her doctor told her she’d
never again ride or even walk. The second person in a wheelchair
in the US to attend veterinary school. Dr. Owen graduated in
2000.
As a rider,
Nellie progressed from riding with a leader and two side-walkers
to performing in local horse shows, performing community
demonstration rides with the Cedar Creek Drill team to
qualifying and competing in the UPHA Exceptional challenge cup.
